Embraced as a cherished holiday tradition by families around the world, Frank Capra's heart-warming masterpiece celebrates 80 years with this big-screen event. George Bailey (James Stewart) sets aside his dreams of world travel to run his father's small community bank and protect the people of Bedford Falls from the greedy businessman Mr. Potter (Lionel Barrymore).
When a costly mistake pushes George to the brink of despair on Christmas Eve, a visit from a kindly angel (Henry Travers) shows him how the life of one good man can change the world forever. Donna Reed plays Mary, the wife who never stopped believing in him, and Thomas Mitchell, Beulah Bondi, Ward Bond and Gloria Grahame fill out the town.

The film that found its audience twice
It's a Wonderful Life opened in December 1946 to five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor, and lost money. A lapse in its copyright renewal in the 1970s put it on television every December, where it became the holiday tradition it is today. The 80th anniversary release brings it back to the place Capra made it for.
Capra and Stewart, together again
It was the first film for both director and star after the war. Capra had made the Why We Fight documentaries for the Army; Stewart had flown bombing missions over Germany. Both later called it the favorite of all their films.
